Although the word, “stress” usually evokes negative connotations, believe it or not, in some instances, stress can actually be a good thing. As a matter of fact, stress is important for our very survival, and can actually help us accomplish important tasks with more efficiency. It helps to boost our memory and also serves as an important warning system, setting off the flight-or-flight response, which, as we all know, can be a life-saving reaction when confronted with a dangerous situation. When the brain recognizes something as a stressful situation, it starts flooding the body with chemicals, such as epinephrine (adrenaline), a chemical that narrows the blood vessels and opens up the airways in the lungs, norepinephrine, which mobilizes the brain and body for action, and cortisol, a steroid hormone that’s released into the blood stream from the adrenal glands.
The problem with stress, however, is that too much of it can be very dangerous! When someone is stressed, emotionally, and that stress persists for weeks or even months, it can definitely weaken a person’s immune system and cause high blood pressure, fatigue, depression, anxiety and even heart disease! Too much epinephrine, in particular, can be very harmful to your heart. So, it’s vitally important, to our overall health, that stress levels are kept in check!
The good news is that keeping our stress levels down is actually something that can be accomplished, with just a little bit of practice. There are some very beneficial routines that you can apply to your every day life, that will actually help you to keep your stress levels down and make you a much happier person! Here are a few helpful ideas; Make it a habit to practice taking deep breaths. This relaxes the body and eliminates panic and tension. Be mindful of what you’re doing, right now. When you’re paying attention to what you’re doing in the present, there’s less chance of being stressed, anxious or worried about the future. Laugh a little, every single day. According to the Mayo Clinic, having a good sense of humor helps you to manage stress and releases endorphins that stimulate your heart, lungs, and circulation, cooling your stress response. Be thankful for everything and focus on the positive things in your life. It helps you worry less! Exercise, it’s good for the body and the soul and produces feel-good hormones in the brain. Get a lot of sleep and stay on a sleep schedule. Getting the adequate amount of sleep definitely helps to reduce stress levels! Eat nutritious foods. Healthy foods have nutrients in them that help us fight our body’s reaction to stress. Don’t consume too much caffeine, which tends to increase anxiety. Spend time with your friends. It helps to have them around, especially in times of need. Spend time outside. Taking short walks in nature helps to reduce stress and boosts mental well-being. Separate your work life from your home life. Disconnecting from work when you get home is so important for de-stressing and maintaining good health.
It’s very easy to get stressed in today’s fast paced world, but having positive routines in our every day lives can empower us and help us to control our emotions, thereby reducing stress. Stress will kill you as fast as a bullet. Find your peace and live there.
